Virus Alert: KillAV.KP prevents access to websites of Anti-Virus companies

The latest report from PandaLabs regards a new sophisticated trojan that is designed to prevent users from accessing websites of antivirus companies and IT security forums. This is so that users will not be able to access information related with security issues or download updates.

This malicious code reaches computers in what looks like an image file with an icon of a cat. To avoid being detected, once run KillAV.KP shows users a .GIF animation (image here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/panda_security/3574720713/ )

Meanwhile, it downloads a file to the system which modifies the Windows Registry to prevent users accessing websites of security companies, etc.

KillAV.KP does not spread automatically using its own means. It needs an attacking user’s intervention in order to reach the affected computer.

As always, make sure that you have an Anti-Virus program protecting your computer and especially make sure that it is up to date. Then get your computer scanned immediately!
