Hoax Alert: “Mail Server Report” email virus warning

Here we go with another hoax email. Just to provide a little background: The “Mail Server Report” virus is real and began circulating in 2006.

The original email that began circulating in 2006 warned of a real virus threat. It had an attachment that was a .ZIP file which contained the actual virus and the email attempts to fool you into opening that .ZIP file. When you do, you are infected with what is known as the Stration.bb or W32/Stration-X worm. This worm distributes itself by searching your computer for email addresses and then sending itself to them.

Another version of the “Mail Server” virus warning began circulating in 2008, however, that is a HOAX. It does a good job of confusing people which may be its intent, but the best practice is to DELETE any email that you do not recognize or know who it is from. Also, be very wary of any emails with attached .ZIP files unless you are expecting them and know what they contain.

If you believe that you have been infected with this or any other malware then please feel free to contact us at CPU Help and we will be happy to assist.
